CALLS FOR FREE PUBLIC TRANSPORT THIS EASTER TO EASE COST OF LIVING PRESSURE

State Nationals MP for Clarence, Richie Williamson, is calling on the Minns Labor Government to support a proposal from the NSW Nationals and Liberals to deliver free public transport across the Easter long weekend, including XPT services and TrainLink coaches.

Mr Williamson said families across regional NSW are being hit hard by soaring fuel prices, with petrol now exceeding $3 per litre in many areas.

“Families are paying more just to do the basics like getting to work or dropping the kids at school,” Mr Williamson said.

“For families in the Richmond and Clarence Valleys and right across our regions, the Easter long weekend often means a long drive and now, an expensive one.”

Mr Williamson said providing free travel on XPT and TrainLink coach services would offer regional families a practical and affordable alternative.

“Experience shows that free public transport increases patronage, boosts local economies through higher foot traffic and spending, and helps reduce pressure on fuel supplies,” he said.

NSW Nationals Leader Gurmesh Singh said increased use of XPT and TrainLink services over Easter would deliver a much-needed boost to regional businesses.

“This is a win-win for regional NSW. More people visiting our regions means more foot traffic and greater spending across our retail outlets, pubs, clubs, cafes, restaurants, and entertainment venues, at a time when many businesses need it most,” Mr Singh said.

NSW Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane said many families are already reconsidering their Easter plans due to rising costs.

“This will be a hard Easter for many NSW families with fuel costs skyrocketing and already stretched household budgets under more pressure,” Ms Sloane said.

“Free public transport over the long weekend is a practical way to put money back in families’ pockets when they need it most.”

Mr Williamson said the Minns Government has an opportunity to provide immediate cost-of-living relief while supporting regional communities.

“This is a simple, practical measure that will make a real difference for families and businesses across NSW this Easter,” he said.
