LOCAL BUILDER APPOINTED TO DELIVER 36 NEW HEALTH WORKER HOMES IN GRAFTON

The appointment of local builder Bennett Constructions (NSW) Pty Ltd to deliver 36 new accommodation units for healthcare workers in Grafton has been welcomed by State Nationals MP for Clarence Richie Williamson.

The announcement comes after the official ground-breaking of the $283.8 million Grafton Base Hospital redevelopment earlier this week, marking another important milestone in the transformation of healthcare infrastructure in the Clarence Valley.

Mr Williamson said the new accommodation would help attract and retain the doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and other essential healthcare workers needed in the region.

“It was a really exciting day on Monday for Grafton and the wider Clarence Valley as we officially broke ground on the new Grafton Base Hospital redevelopment,” Mr Williamson said.

“Today we can welcome another important milestone, with local builder Bennett Constructions appointed to deliver 36 new homes for healthcare workers right across the road from the hospital.

“It is fantastic to see a Northern NSW company taking on this important project, providing opportunities for local workers, trades and businesses along the way.”

The 36 modern, self-contained one-bedroom units will be created through the refurbishment of existing buildings at the former minimum-security wing of the old Grafton Gaol site, with work expected to begin in the coming weeks and be completed by mid-2027.

Mr Williamson recently visited the newly refurbished administration buildings at the former Grafton Gaol site, which are now being used by Grafton Base Hospital administrative staff.

“It was great to see the transformation that has taken place, and the staff I spoke with were very happy in their new workplace,” Mr Williamson said.

“The precinct also includes an impressive education and training centre, providing modern facilities and technology to support our healthcare workforce right here in the Clarence Valley.

“We are now seeing the old Grafton Gaol site given a new purpose, supporting our health workforce while also helping make way for the new hospital facilities.

“Having quality accommodation directly opposite the hospital is a real asset when it comes to attracting and retaining healthcare workers in a regional community.

“After many years of advocating for the investment Grafton Base Hospital needs, it is fantastic to see this transformation now taking shape.

“For our community, this is about more than construction.  It is about delivering a modern hospital, supporting the people who work in it and ensuring families across the Clarence can access high-quality healthcare closer to home.”
