MV BEARDMORE MOVES CLOSER TO STATE HERITAGE LISTING

The historic MV Beardmore has moved a step closer to receiving State heritage recognition, with the Heritage Council of NSW recommending the vessel be listed on the NSW State Heritage Register.

State Nationals Member for Clarence Richie Williamson welcomed the recommendation, which follows a public consultation process earlier this year.

Mr Williamson said the recommendation was a significant milestone in recognising the vessel’s important contribution to the history of the Clarence Valley and the broader Northern Rivers region.

“The MV Beardmore is an important part of our region’s story and I welcome the Heritage Council’s recommendation to the Minister for Heritage,” Mr Williamson said.

“The vessel has a long and proud history on the Clarence River, particularly through its role supporting the sugar industry and river transport operations for many decades.

“The MV Beardmore helped support an industry that has been central to the identity and economy of the Clarence Valley for generations.”

Mr Williamson said the vessel’s significance extended beyond its industrial history.

“The MV Beardmore also represents an important chapter in Aboriginal economic development through its ownership and operation by the Nungera Aboriginal Cooperative during the 1970s and 1980s,” he said.

“Those historical connections are an important part of what makes this vessel unique and worthy of recognition.”

Mr Williamson thanked everyone who took the time to participate in the public consultation process.

“I know there is strong community interest in preserving and recognising our local history, and I thank all those who made submissions as part of the consultation process,” he said.

“The Heritage Council has now completed its assessment and provided its recommendation to the Minister for Heritage, who will make the final decision on whether the MV Beardmore is formally listed on the State Heritage Register.”

Mr Williamson said he looked forward to the Minister’s determination and would continue to keep the community informed as the process progresses.
