WILLIAMSON CALLS FOR ONGOING DUAL FERRY OPERATION AT BLUFF POINT

Long peak-hour queues and growing frustration for local commuters have prompted NSW Nationals State Member for Clarence, Richie Williamson to call on the NSW Labor Government to reinstate dual-ferry operations at the Bluff Point ferry service at Lawrence.

Mr Williamson has written to NSW Regional Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison seeking a firm commitment to operating two ferries on an ongoing basis — particularly during morning and afternoon peak periods — to ease traffic delays on both sides of the river.

Mr Williamson said the recent period during which the Government operated two 18-car ferries, while the 24-car vessel was under maintenance, had clearly demonstrated the benefits of dual services.

“During that time, the combined capacity of 36 vehicles was extremely effective in managing peak-hour traffic and keeping queues to a minimum,” Mr Williamson said.

“Now that the 24-car ferry has resumed sole operation, waiting times have blown out again to 20–30 minutes, with some motorists reportedly waiting multiple crossings.”

Mr Williamson said local residents were increasingly frustrated that the second 18-car ferry now sits idle except during maintenance periods, despite clear community need.

“I have spoken with many Lawrence residents who use this service daily,” he said.

“They tell me the current arrangements are no longer adequate. Traffic delays, safety risks created by overflow queues on both approaches, and the visible under-utilisation of the second ferry are causing understandable frustration and concern.”

Mr Williamson said the Bluff Point ferry is an essential transport link for the Lawrence, Woodford Island and surrounding communities.

“In light of the obvious demand, I have asked the Minister to provide an update on what steps the Government will take to reassess ferry capacity needs and explore operational improvements, including reinstating the second vessel during peak periods.”

“I thank the Minister for her attention to this matter and look forward to her response.”
